The annual reports (FY1932-1940, FY1943, FY1945-FY1962) were begun in 1932 as a recordkeeping tool for the institution; beginning in the 1940s, they seem to have been sent to the Public Welfare Department and the Governor. They contain statistics on treatment, patient admission and discharge, patient background, and visitors; lists of staff members; reports regarding sanatorium conditions, policies, and needs of the institution; institutional and departmental financial statements; reports covering tuberculosis legislation; and articles and pamphlets written by the medical staff. These are much more detailed than the biennial reports and contain both patient and financial data.
The 1932 report includes a history, statement of laws, statistics on each of the buildings--when built, cost, etc.--a report on bird banding done by patients during 1928-1931, and a chart showing the daily average patient population from 1908 through 1932. Other unique items found in the reports include correspondence and documents concerning treatment of Minnesota's Indian population (1933) and an investigation into charges of inadequate treatment at the sanatorium (1937); the sanatorium's simplified cost system (1934); financial statements for projects involving penal camp and Work Projects Administration workers (1936-1940); and Mantoux study results (1940).
The biennial reports (1908-1942) are mainly written reports of the departments and administration, with medical and administrative statistics on patients. They contain very little financial data.
